Jim Thur I'm glad that the concept of "brotherhood" came through so strongly. It can't be fully explained, only experienced. For me, I have experienced the brotherhood on multiple occasions.

First, yes Vietnam, but also through several years at sea chasing Soviet subs. We both carried tactical nuclear warheads. When you are both the launch site and the only target in the area, you appreciate each moment you are given.

Second, I worked for the VA after VN and tried to help many vets who brought VN home with them.

Third, from 2008 until 2014 I worked directly with veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. I have sat in motel rooms watching veterans shoot up meth while trying to talk them into entering treatment.

Fourth, I am fairly active on social media with multiple veterans groups. The physical, mental, and spiritual pain that veterans experience becomes real to me every day.

I do have another experience that is frequently positive. That is my service as an ombudsman for members of the Guard and Reserve who have employment problems.
